Subscriptions
paid and unpaid
I/m thinking of asking subscribers to consider giving $5.00 a month for their subscriptions. It’s antithetical to my priest’s vows to turn people away for not paying, but I find I’m dedicating more and more time to writing and as my subscribers grow, that’s an even greater inducement to keep producing. I would like feedback from my subscribers about how they’d feel about a monthly contribution. I currently live on a pension, and last month, given the War in Iran and rising prices, was the first time ever that I could not pay a monthly credit card off in full. Whether people pay or not, I’ll keep my posts available to everyone, but I’d like feedback about the question. Personally it irritates me if people forbid non-subscribers from corresponding. That’s not a very generous attitude towards wisdom. Thank you.

Sir, I’m such an admirer of your work. However, Substack is becoming impossibly expensive for people like me — $5 per month for every great contributor like you is quickly turning into several hundreds a year for me. I fully get your need for paid subscribers. But I hope Substack finds way to “bundle” subscriptions so that more of can support folks like you….
I live on a pension as well, and as much as I respect your writing and appreciate you, there simply is nothing to spare here. A subscription would literally come out of the food budget, which is already inadequate.
Times are hard, and getting harder. There are millions of us just hanging on by fingernails.
